BEWARE of “Cheap” Auto Transportation

The horror stories you hear about auto transporters are true

Brokers:  These are not truckers and some disguise themselves as the carrier or transporter. They serve their purpose if you don’t have the time to find a carrier yourself. They are bonded for “errors and omissions up to $10,000. They must be registered with U.S. Dept. of Transportation [DOT].They are NOT insured for damages and are not required by law to carry CARGO & LIABILITY Insurance. Many pose as “the best way to get discount or cheap freight”. They claim to use only Licensed and Insured Carriers. Since you are isolated from the carrier until after you have contracted with the broker. You have little or no way to tell.  Unless you can’t be bothered or don’t have the time to research a carrier directly using a broker (especially a discount broker) can be asking for many unnecessary complications. This can be the riskiest way to book Auto transportation

Carriers (Legal):  These are trucking companies or transporters of vehicles. They are required by law to be registered with The DOT. They will have the following; A DOT number that you can track their Safety Record by. To be a LEGAL Carrier they must have an Operating Authority issued by the US DOT and will post its Motor Carrier number on its letterhead and advertisements. This is less risky because you have more vital information on the trucker BEFORE you contract with them directly by going to www.dot.gov

A legal Carrier must have $1,000,000 of liability insurance but may not have “Cargo insurance.” Up to 70% of the Carriers bidding on discount web sites are not fully insured for “Cargo”

FULLY INSURED Legal Carrier:  These are trucking companies or transporters of vehicles. They carry “Cargo” insurance along with the needed DOT and Motor Carrier Authority. They will deal directly with you and will stay in constant communication till your vehicle arrives at your designated destination. This type of carrier is usually owned and operated by a professional driver and requires his drivers to hold a Commercial Drivers License. This is the least risky because you have more vital information on the trucker BEFORE contracting them directly.  Going to www.dot.gov This type carrier can provide you with a certificate of insurance  stating the amount and type of coverage on your car.
